Sports require an extraordinary commitment in order to obtain success.  It is exhausting simply to observe the training an athlete undergoes, let alone to endure that training.  Hours upon hours of one’s life are committed to achieving the goal of winning.  Countless numbers of people have been inspired by the training scenes in the “Rocky” movies.  With regard to sports that use a ball, there is an expression that is used to instill a sense of commitment and motivation, you have probably heard this expression, “Be the Ball!”  It bespeaks a sense of oneness with the sport at hand, as if a person is not simply performing, but the game is part of who they are.

Living the Gospel of Jesus Christ requires this same attitude of commitment.  St. Paul made this connection for us when he wrote in the First Letter to the Corinthians:

Do you not know that in a race all the runners compete, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Well, I do not run aimlessly, I do not box as one beating the air; but I pommel my body and subdue it, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:24-27)

If athletes can do the grueling work they do for the sake of winning a game or a match, then we should be encouraged to do whatever it is we can do to win others for Christ, and to ultimately say with St. Paul:

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. (2 Timothy 4:7-8)
