Back in primary school, we participated in an annual sports event called the “Loretto Olympics”, named after our school. I remember long jumping, high jumping, and sprinting in hope of winning a bronze, silver, or gold medal. It was the only exposure to track and field we had as youngsters, since all our sports activities centered on the traditional team sports.
This event reflected an important aspect of youth education, which stresses the importance of exercising the human body. This philosophy is shared today halfway around the world and in Nigeria by HEAL Founder, Deacon Leo Okonkwo. “Child education must take a holistic approach and so we create opportunities for the Masters to display their athletic skills,” he said referring to the just completed Inter-House Sports day at BOMCA.
Inter-House Sports Day took place Friday, March 15 and included track and field events such as discus and javelin throw, high jump, and sprint races from 100–1,500 meters. Martina Madu, Head Mistress of BOMCA Primary School Section and event coordinator, praised the competitive spirit of the “houses” or teams as they cheered each other onto victory.
And, if any of the students were reluctant to physically exert themselves, some of their teacher and MOJ Sisters encouraged them with examples of Servant Leadership. “Even some of the older teachers and MOJ Sisters engaged in the events thereby encouraging the masters to fully participate!” Martina said. Indeed, SS-1 student Michael Chibuzor appreciated the examples of leadership. “I competed with some of my male teachers in the 100-meter dash,” he said. “This really helped me gauge my abilities inspired in me a desire to improve my skills.”
Even Rev. Sr. Racheal Ulor, MOJ joined in the fun and re-lived her secondary school days by throwing the javelin! In the end, the participants grew in body and spirit according to HEAL’s mission of forming Servant Leaders for the future. Young Michael summed it up best saying, “Now, I have learned that I can achieve anything I want in life if I am able to work hard, be committed, and stay focused.”
