I recently wrote about the partial reopening of schools in Nigeria in the continuing battle against COVID-19 and our need for medical supplies to ensure best health practices are followed.
Proper use of medical supplies and implementation of official health directives is only possible through the supervision of health professionals.
But neither medical supplies nor health professionals are easy to come by for private missionary schools like BOMCA and MENPS.
“Federal and state governments only assist public schools”, explains Rev. Leo Okonwko. “It is unheard of for private schools to receive any kind of government aid in our country.”
Of course, rather than feel sorry for ourselves, we turn to you and every HEAL patron to help us secure what is needed during this crisis!
Our nurse, Ms. Agatha Anyanwu, lives in Akpim village and joined the mission a few years ago after the MOJ Sisters asked her to help a sick student.
“Working in the mission brings me fulfilment and meaning,” she says smiling. “I feel very happy taking care of these children, whom I see as my own!”
Before the pandemic hit, Agatha treated any MOJ sister, teacher, or student for small injuries and minor illnesses using basic supplies and medicines.
Now, in the midst of the pandemic, her job has become harder. “I can no longer just assume a fever is most likely malaria, easily treatable with familiar medication,” she says.
Instead, Agatha will be training school staff to assess whether a student’s symptoms match those of COVID-19 and to take proper measures to remove that child from school until he or she is treated and recovers.
To meet reopening requirements, we must raise $5,000 for the supplies. Also, help us pay Agatha’s salary through our HEAL Fund.
Pray for the Masters as we take every precaution to protect their health during the pandemic!
