Among the many ways of showing appreciation for teachers, one familiar American gesture is placing an apple on the teacher’s desk. In Nigeria, good teachers are highly valued and celebrated, although not in terms of the size of their paycheck.
In observance of World Teachers Day, BOMCA students used their artistic talents to entertain their teachers and to convey a deeper message. “I was part of a performance to honor our teachers and let them know we are proud of them and happy they are educating us”, said student Ugo Modesta.
Basic science teacher, Okeke Peter, reveled in his one day cause célèbre status. “I was so impressed by the love and appreciation our students showed us that I am motivated to be an even better teacher for them,” he said. One wonders if BOMCA teachers can do a better job given the already proven academic success of their students!
This success record can be attributed to teachers living out their passion and purpose. Mr. Okeke revealed that he became a teacher because he admired his own teachers as a young student and wanted to be like them. Knowing this about him should bolster your confidence that the young minds of the Masters are in good hands!
In performing for their teachers, BOMCA students showed they are learning not just academics but also how to be Servant Leaders as Christ taught us (Mt. 20:26). “My teachers have helped me become a good human being, respect my elders, communicate well, overcome stage fright, and share my talents with others”, Ugo Modesta says.
Given all they do for their students, all from poor families and not a few who are orphans, BOMCA teachers deserve much more than one day of celebration. Please join Ugo Modesta and all the Masters by supporting our teachers with your best gift to HEAL!
