In my conversations with Leo Okonkwo, Vice-President of HEAL, I have learned much about Nigeria that highlights a very important element of our mission. I learned that Nigeria was once a British colony and didn’t achieve independence until 1960. Britain capitalized on Nigeria’s natural resources, such as oil, for the purpose of increasing the wealth of British investors in such ventures.

Enhancing African life means developing our own agricultural and livestock operations!

Sadly, since independence from Britain in 1960, and even though Nigeria is the 6th largest oil producing country in the world, most of the nation’s wealth does not benefit the vast majority of Nigerians.  When I visited Nigeria in March, I saw the extreme poverty among the common people often caused by politicians for whom corruption is a way of life.  This economic milieu is where HEAL enters the scene with a vision rooted in the spirituality of self-emptying for the spiritual and economic uplifting of the poor and marginalized.

HEAL develops the character and entrepreneurial spirit of the People of God in this hidden part of the world.  The rejected and neglected people of the Niger Delta will become the cornerstones (Ps 118:22) upon which a new Nigeria will be built.  Our children will acquire the skills to achieve prosperity in Nigeria, as Nigerians.  They won’t feel the pressure to leave their country to find opportunity!  This is HEAL’s vision and model for Nigeria, Cameroon, and, in God’s time, all West Africa!

The power Who empowers and organizes us is the Holy Spirit, sent to us by Jesus Christ in His self-emptying sacrifice on the Cross.  This empowerment will take place in classroom education and in the agricultural-skills building and revenue-generating programs of HEAL.  Rather than enriching foreign investors or corrupt politicians, HEAL enables the poor and marginalized of Africa to build their own dignity and prosperity.

You can help us make it happen!
