Isaiah writes that though a mother may forsake her child, God will never abandon us (Cf. Is 49:15). This scripture came to mind as I followed the tragic story of Perpetua, a native of Akpim village where BOMCA is located and a neighbor of HEAL’s mission.

Perpetua recently died of a severe case of diabetic foot, which progressed to the point of severe ulcers appearing on both of her legs.  Last minute efforts failed to stop life threatening blood loss among other complications. News of Perpetua’s deteriorating health came to us through her cousin and friend of HEAL, Jecinta Ibe.

“Perpetua lost her mother a few years ago and her father this past March”, said Jacinta. “Now an adult orphan, her husband then abandons her because they could not conceive a child.” These tragic family events didn’t cause Perpetua’s diabetic problems, but they certainly made them worse. Money she had previously for treatment began to dwindle.

“Her diabetic foot wounds began in 2018 and she received treatment at a medical center in Bayelsa State”, explained Jacinta. “But, once her father became sick in 2019, family funds completely dried up.”  Perpetua was forced to rely on her brother, an herbal practitioner, for treating her condition as best he could.

Jacinta, a nurse living with her family in the UK, finally contacted Deacon Leo to convey Perpetua’s downward spiral.  We decided to help Perpetua in spite of her bleak prognosis according to HEAL’s medical consultant, Dr. Jane Frances Okonkwo.  In April, she was admitted to Holy Rosary Hospital in Emekuku and received compassionate care.

Rev. Sr. Racheal Ulor, MOJ accompanied Perpetua throughout her battle with diabetic foot and its harsh effects until the end. “Perpetua was strong”, recalled Sr. Rachael. “In spite of all the pains endured, Perpetua refused to ask ‘why me’ or lose her faith in God.”  Indeed, whose faith would not be tested after your parents die and your spouse abandons you for infertility!?

We are sad to have lost Perpetua, but we thank God she received care in the end rather than be left to die at home abandoned and alone. Jacinta Ibe knew she could count on HEAL to do something for Perpetua. That’s why she called on Deacon Leo.

The MOJ Sisters came to Perpetua’s side and fulfilled those words of Isaiah 49:15 that, though a mother may abandon her child, God will never abandon us.

Rest in peace, Perpetua! Pray for us!
