As a pampered child in America, I always dreaded going back to school after a fun filled summer.  Like most youngsters, I hated school.

But, I’m not surprised Nigerian students are eager to end their COVID-19 quarantine and begin learning again.  Upon hearing Nigerian schools are reopening, BOMCA Academy’s Ugbaja Concepta couldn’t be happier.

Senior Secondary student Ugbaja Concepta.

“I have missed my teachers and friends and am excited to be back in school learning again”, the SS-2 student said of the October 12th reopening.

She has reasons to be excited.  Unlike in first world nations, the pandemic lockdown in Nigeria didn’t come with care packages or stimulus checks.

“While Nigeria copied first world countries in closing schools, they failed to make provisions for the welfare of children during the lockdowns”, says HEAL Founder, Leo Okonkwo.

During the heaviest restrictions, HEAL performed three food relief operations for village people enduring hunger caused by food shortages plus the total absence of public assistance.

Students not only lacked food while away from school, but also alternatives for learning.  “Schools were closed so suddenly back in March, we were not prepared to send students home with a plan”, said Martina Madu, Headmistress of BOMCA Academy Primary Section.

Lessons learned by the time schools closed in March, would be forgotten rather than reinforced in the subsequent months.  Concepta knows she has a lot of make up work to do.  “That is a little scary for me, but I will do my best”, she says.

Besides the make up work, teachers and students must continue observing health safety.  With all students of every grade returning, lack of classroom space poses the greatest challenge.  “To ensure social distancing is maintained, we must create temporary outdoor classrooms using tents”, Deacon Leo says.

We have already raised funds for medical supplies and to pay our nurse after schools partially reopened for exam classes on August 4th.  Operating at full capacity, however, requires more effort to achieve health compliance.

As Concepta said, she is excited to finally be back in school.  With your help,  HEAL will ensure she has everything she needs to get back on track and excel!
